High anion gap metabolic acidosis is a form of metabolic acidosis characterized by a high anion gap (a medical value based on the concentrations of ions in a patient's serum). Metabolic acidosis occurs when the body produces too much acid, or when the kidneys are not removing enough acid from the body. Several types of metabolic acidosis occur, grouped by their influence on the anion gap. WebNormal AG = 8-12 mEq/L with a serum albumin of 4g/dl. The normal AG depends on serum albumin. The expected "normal" range for AG can be calculated by 2.5 x albumin (g/dl) +/- 2. For severe hypoalbuminemia (2.0 g/dl), the expected gap would be 5 +/- 2, and an AG of 8-12 would be abnormally elevated.
