WebMar 24, 2024 · The National Anthem of Greece consists of the first stanzas of the poem “Hymn to Freedom”, written in May 1823 on the island of Zakynthos by the poet Dionysios Solomos. The poem was published in Mesolonghi one year later and was included by French historian Claude Charles Fauriel in a collection of Greek folk songs. Webanthem, preferring instead a translation of the Bavarian national anthem, Bavaria being the German state where Otto was born. After the overthrow of Otto the new monarch, King George I, enshrined Solomos’s work as the national anthem in 1864. In the poem, Solomos depicts the return of Freedom to Greece after an absence of many centuries.
